TThe original business in what is now Browns Food Group, Brown Brothers Ltd began as a small family butchers, opened and run by the Brown family in Biggar, Scotland. The Brown family started off by distributing their meat, cured bacon and sausages, by horse and cart throughout Lanarkshire and the surrounding areas. Business flourished and two further traditional ‘factory’ units were opened to satisfy regional demand.
In 1985 the Godfrey family bought the Brown family’s small business, and with six members of staff continued to uphold the values, tradition and quality of products held by the Brown family. In 1993 the business moved to a new state of the art factory in Dumfriesshire, becoming Brown Brothers Manufacturing Ltd. The new site paved the way for both frozen and chilled products to be manufactured and distributed, enabling the product range to be extended and providing continued opportunity for growth.
After the move to the new site, production increased at an exponential rate thanks to innovation and an emphasis on state-of-the-art equipment. The purchase of modern slicing equipment in 1994 led into phase 1 of the site extension in 1996, creating a 35,000 square ft site with a new butchery facility. 1996 also saw the launch of our brand, Borders Gourmet, and it’s range of high quality cooked meats. In 1998, phase 2 of the site extension saw Brown Brothers expand to 65,000 square ft, with the addition of coldstore and despatch facilities, and the installation of more modern equipment, including a high speed slicer and thermoforming equipment.
Phase 3 of the extension in 2000 saw our state-of-the-art site expand to 110,000 square ft, with an extension in the High Risk section of production. Premium brand, Tarbert Fine Foods, launched in 2001; Tarbert Fine products now feature in major retailers nationally. 2005 saw a further extension to 120,000 sq ft and from 2005 to 2009 saw large investment and installation of even more modern equipment lines, including laser slicing lines, high speed slicers and thermoforming equipment.
In 2014 Brown Brothers expanded to 150,000 sq ft, with further developments to High Risk, slicing, despatch, a nitrate-only facility and the installation of another laser slicer line. 2015 saw further improvements with security measures installed to the entire site, the building of truck yards for our large distribution and freight facilities, and extra office space built to accommodate the expansion in all areas of the business, including our in-house design team and import/export team.
Brown Brothers Ltd is now one of the UK's largest cooked and sliced meat producers, supplying some of the country's largest supermarkets nationwide. .
